Following the immense success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed over $1 billion at the box office, Nintendo wasted no time in greenlighting a sequel. In a recent video, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination Entertainment's Chris Meledandri announced that the next installment is currently in development, slated for release on April 3rd, 2026.

Meledandri revealed that Illumination Studios Paris, the team behind the first film, is currently storyboarding the sequel, helmed once again by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. Animation is set to commence shortly. Following its US release on April 3rd, 2026, the movie will premiere in "many other markets globally" before rolling out to "select territories" throughout the remainder of the month.

Miyamoto emphasized that the sequel will feature a "bright and fun story" that builds upon the established world of the first film.

Nintendo also shared gaming updates, revealing that the Switch remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, a remastered version of the 3DS title Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, are scheduled for release on May 23rd and June 27th, respectively. Additionally, on March 12th, the Nintendo Switch Online Game Boy collection will be expanded to include Dr. Mario for the original Game Boy, as well as Mario Golf and Mario Tennis for the Game Boy Color.
